6 Ways to Stay on Target to Your Goal Weight
Often, the biggest obstacle we face in getting extra weight off and keeping it off is time. When I am eating healthily and exercising regularly I can’t help but allow those negative thoughts to creep into my mind, the ones that question “how long can I keep this up?”
It’s a good question.
For every successful diet, must be followed by maintainence otherwise, you will fall into the terrible statistic of people who gain back 105% of the weight they lose when dieting.
Try these tips below to help you stay on target:
- 1) Write down your goals
You may have heard this before but there is a specific way to use this more effectively than most.
Make sure that your goals are measurable, specific and include a time factor.
Don’t say, I want to lose a lot of weight. Instead say, I want to lose 10 pounds by February.
- 2) Review your goals regularly
Type and print out your goals.
Put them into a frame and post them on the wall.
Dedicate some time to reviewing them regularly, even saying the declaration out loud.
- 3) Celebrate your small successes
This one can be difficult for some.
When you have a goal of losing 20 lbs, it can be really tough to get excited about losing only ½ lb, but you must
A great deal of success in any area is in the way you see yourself. If you constantly berate yourself for being a person who cannot lose weight then that is what you will always be, a person who cannot lose weight.
Acknowledge the things you do well and you will create a better self-image.
When your self-image is consistent with that of person who succeeds in loosing weight, you will be surprised at the results.
Now for the practical stuff!
- 4) Modify your exercise routine
One of the biggest problems people have in their workout routine is that they get comfortable with a routine and want to stick with it
At first, they see great results and then they experience a plateau and cannot understand why.
If you are getting comfortable with a routine then your body is getting comfortable as well.
Exercise results in weight loss only when you push yourself beyond your current level. If you stick with your current level, results will cease.
- 5) Have fun with your diet
Diets are rarely fun. We are so use to seeing them as punishment that we resign ourselves to the fact that, in order to lose weight, we will have to suffer through bland and tasteless food.
This is counterproductive.
Not only do you need a diet to help you lose weight, you need a diet that you can stick with in the long term to actually keep the weight off.
Forget about fad diets that promise to work quickly if you starve yourself or stick to one color food for the rest of your life.
There are countless books out there giving many variations of healthy eating options. Try one, find what works, it will be a lot easier to stick with than the latest crazy and unrealistic fads.
I found excellent and very specific advice came with the bonuses offered alongside the book, , Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto.
- 6) Adopt a healthy mindset
Yes, I put this under practical.
Too often, we begin our weight loss efforts with the wrong objective. We want to be thin.
Let’s get more conscious of the most important problem with being overweight. It is not in the exterior looks department, instead it is internal, your health.
As you age, weight loss issues have a greater and greater negative impact on your general health.
Depending on your size, you could even begin to feel these impacts even in your youth.
I remember reading that people who jump up and down within 30 lbs more than twice throughout their adulthood greatly increase their risk of heart disease. This is a serious problem.
As you decide each day whether you will go to the gym, take that walk, stick to your diet or drop by the fast food restaurant on your way home, consider not just the aesthetic but also the health issues.
Venuto’s book offers numerous insights to help you adopt the right mindset for weight loss.
